Paul Signac painted Regatta in Concarneau in 1891, during a period when he was refining the application of Neo-Impressionist theory. The work displays his systematic approach to colour, utilising the technique of pointillism to construct the image through small, distinct dots of pigment. By placing complementary colours side by side, Signac aimed to achieve a greater luminosity than traditional mixing on the palette allowed.
The composition depicts a fleet of fishing boats with distinctive purple sails moving across the water. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe the rhythmic repetition of the vessels as they recede into the distance. Signac focuses on the interaction between the light reflecting off the sea and the atmospheric conditions of the sky. The water is rendered in a dense field of blue, green, and white dots, which creates a sense of movement and texture. The sails, rendered in shades of violet and magenta, provide a strong contrast against the cooler tones of the maritime environment.
Signac was a central figure in the development of Divisionism, following the early work of Georges Seurat. His interest in the French coastline, particularly the ports of Brittany, provided him with subjects that suited his interest in light and water. The arrangement of the boats suggests a sense of order, while the application of paint maintains a sense of energy. Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
