A 1982 Neo-Expressionist work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, featuring a central red figure surrounded by iconic motifs including the crown and aircraft.
Jean-Michel Basquiat produced Red Man in 1982, a period during which his work gained significant visibility within the New York art scene. The composition features a central, abstracted figure rendered in shades of red, set against a muted, ochre-toned background. Basquiat employs a raw, gestural application of paint, characteristic of his approach to the canvas as a site for both visual and textual information.
The work incorporates various motifs that recur throughout Basquiat's oeuvre, including the crown, simplified vehicle outlines, and an aircraft silhouette. These elements are not arranged in a traditional narrative structure. Instead, they function as semiotic markers, reflecting the artist's interest in urban environments, social hierarchies, and the commodification of culture. The presence of the crown, a recurring symbol in his paintings, suggests themes of power and authority, often juxtaposed with the vulnerability of the central figure.
Basquiat's technique involves the layering of oilstick and acrylic, creating a surface that appears both spontaneous and calculated. The lines are direct and unrefined, echoing the aesthetic of street art and graffiti that informed his early practice as SAMO. The text elements, including the repeated word 'BOARD', add a rhythmic quality to the composition, further complicating the relationship between image and language. By stripping away traditional perspective, Basquiat forces the viewer to engage with the canvas as a flat, dense field of signs. This piece captures the energy of the early 1980s art world, where the boundaries between high art and street culture were frequently blurred. The work remains a primary example of his ability to synthesise disparate visual languages into a cohesive, albeit challenging, visual statement.
