George Lance, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century British painting, specialised in the genre of still life. His work often combined traditional arrangements of produce and game with narrative elements, a technique clearly visible in this 1857 composition. The painting depicts a monkey, dressed in a small jacket and a red cap, positioned amongst a collection of market goods including a mallard, cabbages, and turnips.

Lance was a pupil of Benjamin Robert Haydon and developed a reputation for his technical ability to render textures. In this piece, the contrast between the soft fur of the animal, the crisp leaves of the vegetables, and the smooth feathers of the bird demonstrates his focus on material reality. The setting, which appears to be a stone alcove or larder, provides a dark, neutral backdrop that allows the colours of the produce to emerge. The inclusion of the monkey introduces a whimsical, almost theatrical quality to the scene, which was a common trope in European art to suggest the mimicry of human behaviour.

This work reflects the Victorian interest in detailed observation and the elevation of the still life genre.
