A refined eighteenth-century etching by Jeanne Deny, featuring a decorative Chinoiserie tent design from the Recueil des Tentes Chinoises series.
This etching by Jeanne Deny serves as the title page for the 'Recueil des Tentes Chinoises', a series of designs originally conceived by the painter Jean Pillement. Deny, a skilled engraver, translated Pillement's imaginative compositions into the medium of print, capturing the delicate line work characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century French graphic art. The composition features a central tent structure, which acts as a frame for the title text, surrounded by stylised flora and a small figure leaning on a staff.
The work reflects the European fascination with Chinoiserie, a decorative style that interpreted East Asian motifs through a distinctly Western lens. Rather than aiming for ethnographic accuracy, the design prioritises a whimsical, ornamental aesthetic. The tent is perched upon a rocky outcrop, flanked by reeds and flowering branches that exhibit the light, airy touch common in Rococo printmaking. Deny's technique relies on precise hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the fabric, the rough terrain, and the organic forms of the plants.
As an engraver, Deny was responsible for disseminating the designs of prominent artists to a wider audience of collectors and craftsmen. This print demonstrates the collaborative nature of eighteenth-century print production, where the invention of the artist and the technical skill of the engraver combined to create popular decorative suites. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the base of the tent indicates its original function as a commercial advertisement for the full collection of prints. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in exoticism and the integration of text with decorative illustration.
