Lucas Cranach the Elder produced several versions of this subject, which draws upon the humanist interest in classical mythology during the Northern Renaissance. The composition features a nude female figure, identified as a river nymph, resting beside a stone fountain. The inscription on the fountain, 'FONTIS NYMPHA SACRI SOMNVM NE RVMPE QVIESCO', serves as a warning to the viewer not to disturb her slumber. This motif reflects the period's fascination with the 'genius loci', or the spirit of a place, often personified in classical literature.

The figure is rendered with the characteristic pale, smooth skin tones favoured by Cranach, contrasting with the dark, atmospheric background. Her pose, with one arm behind her head and legs crossed, follows a specific iconographic tradition that Cranach adapted for his courtly patrons. Behind the nymph, the scene transitions into a detailed, somewhat stylised depiction of a forest and a distant mountainous view, typical of the Danube School style. The inclusion of the fountain provides a structural anchor to the composition, separating the foreground figure from the expansive, slightly melancholic background.

Cranach's approach to the female form in this work is less concerned with anatomical realism and more focused on a refined, elongated aesthetic that appealed to the tastes of the Saxon court.
