A gestural etching by Lovis Corinth, capturing a reclining figure with fluid, expressive lines and minimal detail.
This etching by Lovis Corinth captures a reclining figure with the immediacy and economy of line characteristic of his graphic work. Produced in 1894, the piece belongs to a portfolio of seven etchings that demonstrate the artist's interest in the human form and his departure from the rigid academic traditions of the late nineteenth century. Corinth employs a gestural approach, using quick, decisive marks to define the contours of the body against the stark white of the paper. The composition focuses on the physical presence of the subject, with shadows suggested through sparse, hatched lines rather than dense tonal modelling.
Corinth was a central figure in the Berlin Secession, a group that sought to break away from the conservative art establishment. His work often bridges the gap between the observational rigour of Impressionism and the more subjective, emotive qualities that would later define Expressionism. In this etching, the artist avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to capture the essence of the pose through a series of fluid, rhythmic strokes. The result is a study that feels spontaneous, as if recorded in a single sitting. The contrast between the dark, etched lines and the expansive negative space creates a sense of lightness, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the anatomy and posture of the figure. This print provides insight into Corinth's technical process, showing how he used the etching needle to translate the energy of his drawing directly onto the copper plate. It is a clear example of his ability to convey volume and weight through minimal means, a skill that remained a constant throughout his career as a painter and printmaker.
