A stark, expressive figure study by Egon Schiele, rendered in black crayon with the artist's signature angularity and focus on raw human form.
Egon Schiele produced this study in 1917, a period during which his draughtsmanship reached a state of refined economy. The work captures a model in a contorted, reclining pose, rendered with the characteristic angularity that defines Schiele's graphic output. By this stage in his career, the artist had moved away from the more decorative, ornamental lines of his earlier Viennese Secessionist influences, favouring instead a stark, direct approach to the human form.
The composition relies entirely on the expressive potential of the line. Schiele uses a black crayon to delineate the figure, focusing on the tension within the limbs and the folds of the chemise. The lack of shading or background context forces the viewer to engage with the silhouette and the deliberate distortion of the anatomy. The model's pose, with one arm raised behind the head and the legs bent, creates a series of sharp angles that disrupt traditional notions of grace.
Schiele's ability to convey psychological weight through minimal marks is evident here. The stockings and the lace trim of the chemise are suggested with quick, shorthand strokes rather than descriptive detail. This approach reflects his interest in the raw, unvarnished reality of his subjects. The work is signed and dated in the lower left corner, a common practice for the artist, who often treated his signature as an integral component of the overall design. As a study, it offers a clear view into his working method, where the speed of execution and the confidence of the hand take precedence over academic finish. It remains a representative example of the artist's focus on the human body as a vehicle for emotional and physical expression.
