A 1744 ink and colour handscroll by Yu Zouyan, depicting a serene villa complex nestled within a misty mountain landscape in the traditional Shanshui style.
This handscroll, titled Rear View of the Mountain Villa for Watching Clouds, is a work by the Qing Dynasty artist Yu Zouyan. Executed in 1744, the piece follows the traditional Shanshui style, which translates to mountain-water painting. The composition presents a serene view of a villa complex situated within a mountainous region, where the architecture is integrated into the natural topography.
The artist employs a delicate ink-wash technique to render the rolling hills and the mist that settles between the peaks. The villa structures are depicted with precise, thin lines, showing the walled courtyards and tiled roofs characteristic of the period. The foreground features cultivated fields and clusters of trees, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the vastness of the terrain. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted greens to maintain the atmospheric quality of the scene.
In Chinese art, such works often reflect the scholar-official ideal of retreating from public life to a secluded residence. The title itself suggests a contemplative purpose, focusing on the act of observing the shifting clouds from a private vantage point. The scroll format allows the viewer to experience the scene as a continuous journey, moving from the architectural details of the villa towards the expansive, misty horizon. The inclusion of calligraphy and seals provides historical context, identifying the work as a specific cultural object from the mid-18th century. This print captures the balance between the structured geometry of the buildings and the organic, fluid forms of the surrounding environment, offering a quiet study of space and perspective.
