A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting pedestrians crossing the Nihonbashi bridge during a rain shower, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
Rain at Nihonbashi Bridge is a woodblock print from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Toto meisho). Produced during the Edo period, this work captures the atmosphere of the Nihonbashi district in Tokyo. The composition centres on the iconic wooden bridge, which served as the starting point for the Tōkaidō road.
Hiroshige employs a series of vertical lines to represent the falling rain, a technique that creates a sense of movement and weather. Pedestrians are shown crossing the bridge, their figures partially obscured by umbrellas, which adds a human element to the scene. In the background, the faint outline of Mount Fuji rises above the rooftops, providing a sense of scale and distance. The architecture of the storehouses along the canal is rendered with precision, reflecting the urban density of the period.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greys, and earthy tones to convey the damp, overcast conditions. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture transient weather phenomena through the medium of woodblock printing. By focusing on the daily life of the city, Hiroshige provides a record of the environment as it appeared in the early 19th century. The print is a representative example of the ukiyo-e tradition, which often explored the relationship between urban life and the natural world. The technical execution of the woodblock carving allows for the subtle gradients in the sky and water, which contribute to the overall mood of the piece.
