A refined portrait of Queen Charlotte by Thomas Gainsborough, capturing the monarch in an elaborate gown with a spaniel at her feet.
Thomas Gainsborough painted this full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte, consort to King George III, around 1781. The work captures the Queen in a formal setting, yet it retains the fluid, painterly touch characteristic of Gainsborough's mature style. She stands in a pose of quiet composure, dressed in an elaborate gown adorned with lace and gold accents, reflecting the fashion of the late eighteenth-century British court.
To her side, a small spaniel looks towards the viewer, adding a touch of domesticity to the royal representation. The background features a heavy, draped curtain in a deep crimson hue, which contrasts with the lighter, cooler tones of the Queen's attire. Through an arched opening on the left, a glimpse of a park-like setting suggests the grounds of a royal residence. Gainsborough uses light to draw attention to the Queen's face and the textures of her silk dress, employing his signature feathery brushwork to suggest the shimmer of fabric and the softness of her features.

Artist Biography
Thomas Gainsborough
Gainsborough composed landscape scenes by building tabletop models from broccoli and cauliflower for trees, lumps of coal for hills, and mirrors for water. He painted from these arrangements in his studio. He said he was sick of portraits and wished he could walk off with his viol-da-gamba to paint landscapes. Portraits paid the bills. Landscapes were what he loved.
He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1727. His father went bankrupt in 1733. He moved to London as a teenager and trained under the French engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot. By his thirties he was one of the two dominant portrait painters in Georgian England, the other being Joshua Reynolds. The rivalry with Reynolds defined both their careers.
The Blue Boy is probably his most famous painting, though he would have preferred to be remembered for his landscapes. On his deathbed he reconciled with Reynolds. Reynolds later wrote that the Royal Academy had lost one of its greatest ornaments. Gainsborough died in 1788, aged sixty-one.
