A fine art print of a Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy quatrain by Emperor Gaozong, rendered in elegant running script on a circular silk ground.
This work is a fan-shaped album leaf featuring the calligraphy of Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty. The text is a quatrain, a four-line poem, written in the running script style. The characters exhibit a fluid, rhythmic quality, reflecting the imperial training in classical brushwork. The ink sits upon a silk ground, which has aged to a warm, muted tone over the centuries.
Emperor Gaozong was a significant patron of the arts, and his own practice of calligraphy was heavily influenced by the masters of the Jin Dynasty, particularly Wang Xizhi. The composition is balanced, with the vertical columns of characters arranged to fit the circular format of the fan. Several red collector seals are visible across the surface, documenting the history of the piece as it passed through various imperial and private collections. These seals provide a visual counterpoint to the black ink, adding a layer of historical texture to the work.
In the context of Song Dynasty aesthetics, this piece demonstrates the high value placed on the personal expression of the scholar-official class, even at the level of the throne. The brushwork is confident, showing a mastery of pressure and speed that defines the running script. The work is not merely a poem, but a physical record of the Emperor's hand, preserved through the medium of ink on silk. It offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the Southern Song court, where poetry and calligraphy were essential components of intellectual identity. The circular format, originally intended for a handheld fan, creates a contained space that focuses the viewer on the interplay between the individual characters and the negative space surrounding them.
