A detailed 1782 engraving by Nicolas Ponce depicting the mythological transformation of Pygmalion's statue into a living woman.
This fine etching and engraving, dated 1782, depicts the classical myth of Pygmalion, the sculptor who fell in love with his own creation. The composition is based on a design by Clément-Pierre Marillier, with the engraving executed by Nicolas Ponce. The scene captures the moment the ivory statue begins to take on human form, stepping down from her pedestal to meet the sculptor.
The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the figures and the surrounding studio environment. Pygmalion is shown in a moment of wonder, reaching towards the figure of Galatea, who is rendered with soft, rounded contours that contrast with the more rigid, architectural elements of the room. In the background, various sculptural fragments and tools are visible, grounding the scene in the reality of a workshop. A seated figure, perhaps representing a deity or an observer, watches the transformation from the foreground.
The work reflects the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, prioritising clarity, balance, and a narrative focus on classical themes. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and depth, typical of the high-quality book illustrations produced during this period. The framing, with its clean borders and formal titling, indicates its origin as a plate for a publication, likely a collection of mythological tales or literary works. This print offers a clear view into the technical skill of French engravers of the era, who were adept at translating complex narrative scenes into small-scale, highly detailed monochrome images. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between literature and visual art in the Neoclassical period.
