A study of putti with a trident by Dutch artist Jacob de Wit, rendered in ink and wash with white heightening.
This drawing by Jacob de Wit captures a group of putti in a dynamic, airborne arrangement. De Wit was a prominent Dutch artist known for his mastery of the 'witje', a technique designed to mimic the appearance of marble relief sculptures through monochrome painting. This study demonstrates his facility with ink and wash, using light and shadow to define the rounded forms of the figures against the paper ground.
The composition features several putti, one of whom holds a trident, suggesting a maritime or mythological theme. The figures are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that suggest movement and weightlessness. De Wit employs white heightening to catch the light on the limbs and wings of the putti, creating a sense of volume that is characteristic of his decorative work. The artist often produced such sketches as preparatory studies for larger ceiling paintings or wall decorations in the grand houses of Amsterdam.
De Wit's work reflects the transition from the heavier Baroque style to the lighter, more ornamental aesthetic of the Rococo period. His ability to create depth and texture using a limited palette of ink and wash remains a defining feature of his output. This print preserves the immediacy of his hand, showing the quick, confident strokes used to establish the poses and the interaction between the figures. The work is a fine example of eighteenth-century Dutch draftsmanship, where the focus lies on the grace of the human form and the decorative potential of mythological subjects.
