A precise botanical study of the Purple Coronilla by Dutch artist Alida Withoos, rendered in delicate watercolour.
Alida Withoos was a notable figure within the Dutch botanical art tradition, active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. As the daughter of the painter Matthias Withoos, she received training in the family studio, eventually gaining recognition for her precise documentation of flora. This study of the Purple Coronilla demonstrates her technical control over watercolour, capturing the delicate structure of the plant with clarity and restraint.
The composition is balanced, allowing the viewer to observe the specific morphology of the leaves and the soft, pale pink hues of the blossoms. Withoos employs a fine brush to delineate the pinnate leaves, which are rendered in muted, sage-like greens. The flowers, clustered at the ends of the stems, exhibit a subtle gradient of colour, moving from white to soft rose. The background remains clean, a characteristic choice in botanical works of this period intended for scientific study or private collection.
During this era, the Dutch Republic was a centre for botanical discovery, with wealthy patrons commissioning artists to record rare specimens from global trade routes. Withoos worked for figures such as Agnes Block, who maintained a famous garden at Vijverhof. These illustrations were not merely decorative; they functioned as visual records for the study of botany. The work reflects the period's interest in natural history, where the objective was to document the physical world with accuracy. The artist's signature is visible at the base, confirming her authorship of this specific sheet. This print offers a view into the intersection of art and science that defined the Dutch approach to nature in the late 1600s.
