A 1902 photochrom print by William Henry Jackson depicting the geothermal features of Punch Bowl Spring in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the Punch Bowl Spring in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer known for his documentation of the American West, utilised this technique to add colour to black-and-white negatives. The resulting print displays the geological features of the spring, including the mineral-crusted rim and the steam rising into the atmosphere.
The composition focuses on the thermal formation, with the foreground showing the textured, ochre-toned deposits created by mineral-rich water. A pool of water sits at the base of the formation, reflecting the sky and surrounding environment. In the background, a dense forest of conifers stretches across the horizon, providing a contrast to the barren, geothermal terrain of the foreground. The steam, captured in a soft, diffused state, adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static geological subject.
Photochrom prints were popular at the turn of the twentieth century, allowing for the mass production of colour images before the widespread adoption of colour photography. This specific print, produced by the Detroit Photographic Company, reflects the era's interest in documenting the natural wonders of the United States. The colour palette is defined by the earthy tones of the mineral deposits, ranging from deep browns and oranges to lighter creams, set against the muted greens of the forest and the pale blue of the sky. The print offers a view into the early twentieth-century perception of the American wilderness, presenting the geothermal activity of Yellowstone with a clarity that was intended for both scientific record and public appreciation.
