A powerful Symbolist work by Mikhail Vrubel, depicting the spiritual awakening of a prophet through a unique, mosaic-like application of paint.
Mikhail Vrubel painted this work in 1898, drawing inspiration from the poetry of Alexander Pushkin. The composition depicts the moment of spiritual transformation described in Pushkin's poem, The Prophet, where a six-winged seraph touches the lips and eyes of a mortal to grant him the gift of divine vision. Vrubel employs a distinct technique, using short, mosaic-like brushstrokes that create a faceted surface. This approach gives the figures a crystalline quality, as if they are constructed from shards of coloured glass or precious stones.
The colour palette is intense, featuring deep blues, ochres, and earthy browns that shift under the light. The seraph appears as a powerful, otherworldly entity, while the prophet is rendered with a sense of vulnerability and awe. Vrubel avoids smooth transitions, preferring instead to build form through the accumulation of these small, deliberate marks. This method reflects his interest in the decorative arts and his experience with stained glass and ceramic design.
As a central figure in Russian Symbolism, Vrubel often explored themes of the supernatural, the demonic, and the spiritual. This work captures the tension between the human and the divine. The arched top of the canvas suggests a connection to religious iconography, yet the treatment of the subject remains firmly within the realm of personal, subjective expression. The figures seem to emerge from a turbulent, atmospheric space, their forms partially dissolving into the background. This print captures the texture and the specific light-reflecting quality of Vrubel's original application of paint, allowing for a close examination of his unique method of construction.
