A powerful lithograph by Ernst Barlach depicting the myth of Prometheus shaping humanity, rendered in the artist's signature raw, expressive style.
Ernst Barlach, a central figure in German Expressionism, produced this lithograph as part of a series exploring the myth of Prometheus. The work depicts the titan in the act of creation, shaping a human form from the earth. Barlach employs a raw, gestural line quality that emphasises the physical exertion of the subject. The figures are rendered with heavy, dark strokes that contrast against the lighter background, creating a sense of weight and volume typical of his sculptural approach to two-dimensional media.
Barlach often focused on themes of human suffering, struggle, and existential tension. In this composition, the relationship between the creator and the created is one of intense focus and physical intimacy. The surrounding environment is suggested through loose, swirling lines that evoke the primordial chaos from which life emerges. Unlike the polished academic style of the nineteenth century, Barlach prioritises emotional resonance and the tactile quality of the medium. The lithographic process allows for a soft, charcoal-like texture that enhances the primitive, earthy nature of the scene.
This print reflects the artist's interest in the human condition during the turbulent years following the First World War. By choosing the Prometheus myth, Barlach engages with the concept of the artist as a creator, mirroring the act of artistic production with the mythological act of breathing life into clay. The composition is contained and focused, drawing the viewer into the interaction between the two figures. It is a stark, monochromatic study that relies on the interplay of shadow and form to convey its narrative. Barlach's work remains a distinct example of the Expressionist movement's move away from realism toward a more subjective, emotive visual language.
