An ethereal illustration by Edmund Dulac from the 1907 collection Fairies I Have Met, featuring delicate figures in a dreamlike setting.
This illustration originates from the 1907 publication of Fairies I Have Met by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell. Edmund Dulac, a prominent figure in the early twentieth-century British publishing scene, produced these images during a period when gift books with tipped-in colour plates were highly popular. His approach to the subject matter relies on a delicate balance of soft, atmospheric washes and precise ink work, which defines the ethereal quality of the scene.
The composition features two figures with translucent, insect-like wings, positioned within a space that suggests a dreamlike or otherworldly environment. The figure on the left wears a flowing, pale blue garment that merges with the petal-like forms surrounding her. The second figure, dressed in warmer tones of pink and brown, appears to interact with the first in a moment of quiet exchange. Dulac employs a muted palette, favouring earthy browns, soft blues, and dusty pinks to maintain a sense of mystery. The background is dark and indistinct, which pushes the figures forward and creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective.
Dulac was known for his ability to adapt his style to the specific requirements of the text, often drawing inspiration from Persian miniatures and Japanese prints. In this work, the influence of these traditions is visible in the flattened spatial arrangement and the focus on decorative line work. The figures possess a grace typical of Dulac's output, avoiding overly sentimental depictions in favour of a more stylised, refined aesthetic. This print captures the specific charm of Edwardian fantasy literature, where the visual accompaniment was as essential to the reader's experience as the prose itself. The work remains a representative example of the technical skill applied to book illustration during this era.
