It depicts the biblical narrative of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, a moment where the infant Christ is brought to the temple to be consecrated. The composition is contained within a painted arch, which mimics the architectural reality of the monastic cell for which it was designed.
Fra Angelico employs a clear, balanced arrangement of figures. The Virgin Mary reaches out to receive the child from Simeon, who holds the infant with reverence. To the left, Saint Joseph carries a basket of offerings, while a kneeling figure, likely a donor or a saint associated with the Dominican order, observes the scene. The figures are rendered with a sense of calm and stillness, characteristic of the artist's approach to devotional imagery. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of ochre, rose, and muted green to define the drapery of the garments.
