A delicate fan painting by Aoki Mokubei, depicting a serene mountain scene associated with the ritual of tea preparation in the Bunjinga tradition.
Aoki Mokubei, a prominent figure in the Japanese Bunjinga (literati) tradition, produced this fan painting using ink and light colour on paper. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where scholars and artists sought inspiration from Chinese painting styles. The composition follows the fan format, requiring the artist to balance the visual weight across the curved surface.
On the left, dense ink washes define a cluster of trees, their foliage rendered with quick, expressive brushwork. The right side features a craggy mountain formation, suggested through lighter ink tones and dry brush strokes that imply texture and geological structure. The negative space between these elements suggests a mountain gorge, a common motif in literati art that evokes a sense of seclusion and intellectual retreat. The scene is quiet, focusing on the act of preparing tea, an activity closely associated with the scholarly life and the appreciation of nature.
Mokubei was not only a painter but also a skilled potter, and his sensitivity to form and texture is evident in the way he handles the ink. The brushwork is deliberate, showing the influence of Chinese masters while maintaining a distinct Japanese sensibility. The work is mounted on a dark blue textile, which provides a contrast to the neutral tones of the paper. This piece offers a glimpse into the private world of the Edo-period intellectual, where art, nature, and the ritual of tea were interconnected. The fan format itself serves as a portable medium for artistic expression, often exchanged between friends or used as a personal object of contemplation.
