A fine etching by Anders Zorn depicting a mother and child entering the water, rendered with the artist's signature rhythmic line work.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international repute, produced this etching in 1911. The work depicts a mother and child entering the water, a recurring theme in his graphic output. Zorn utilised his characteristic technique of rapid, rhythmic lines to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The etching demonstrates his ability to capture the movement of light upon water and the tactile quality of skin through varied cross-hatching.
Zorn was a master of the etching medium, often working directly onto the copper plate with a freedom that mirrored his approach to oil painting. In this composition, the figures are positioned in the shallow water, with the reeds on the left providing a vertical balance to the scene. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest form through the direction and density of his lines. This economy of mark-making allows the viewer to perceive the atmosphere of the Swedish coastline, a location central to much of his work.
The print reflects the artist's interest in the natural world and the human form, presented without artifice. Zorn's technical proficiency is evident in the way he manages the tonal range, moving from the light, open areas of the water to the deeper, more concentrated lines that ground the figures. The work is signed by the artist in the lower margin, a common feature of his limited edition prints. This piece offers an insight into the graphic practice of a painter who successfully translated the immediacy of his observations into the precise, disciplined medium of etching.
