A seminal work of Orphism, this 1913 painting by Robert Delaunay explores the optical effects of colour through concentric circles.
Premier Disque, painted in 1913, represents a significant moment in the development of early twentieth-century abstraction. Robert Delaunay moved away from representational forms to explore the physical properties of colour and light. By focusing on the circular form, he engaged with the concept of simultaneity, a theory he developed alongside his wife, Sonia Delaunay. The composition consists of concentric rings divided into four quadrants, creating a sense of rotation and movement through the juxtaposition of contrasting hues.
The painting is a primary example of Orphism, a term coined by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire to describe the lyrical, colour-based abstraction emerging from Cubism. Delaunay utilised the scientific theories of Michel Eugène Chevreul regarding the law of simultaneous contrast of colours. By placing complementary colours side by side, he achieved a visual effect where the boundaries between shapes appear to vibrate or shift. This approach prioritised the optical experience of the viewer over the depiction of external reality.
Unlike the rigid, geometric structures found in the works of his contemporaries, Delaunay allowed for a softer, more painterly application of pigment. The circular format, or tondo, reinforces the cosmic or solar associations often attributed to his work during this period. The work functions as an investigation into how pure colour can generate rhythm and space without the need for traditional perspective. It remains a clear demonstration of the artist's interest in the mechanics of human vision and the expressive potential of non-objective art.
