A fine art print of a 17th-century prayer manual page by the Ottoman master calligrapher Hafiz Osman, featuring precise Naskh script and gold illumination.
This work displays the mastery of Hafiz Osman, a figure of immense importance in the history of Ottoman calligraphy. Osman is credited with refining the Naskh script, a style of writing that became the standard for copying the Quran and other religious texts throughout the Ottoman Empire. His contribution to the development of the six scripts, or Aqlam al-Sitta, helped establish a formalised aesthetic that balanced legibility with fluid, rhythmic grace.
The composition features two panels of text set against a soft, rose-coloured background. The script is executed in black ink, demonstrating the precise control and balanced proportions characteristic of Osman's hand. The text is framed by gold borders, which provide a clear separation between the written word and the surrounding decorative field. The margins are decorated with a repeating motif of stylised leaves, rendered in dark blue and white. This decorative choice adds a sense of order to the page without distracting from the primary focus, which is the calligraphic content.
As a prayer manual, the object serves a functional purpose while maintaining a high level of artistic finish. The use of gold leaf and carefully applied pigments indicates that this was a work intended for a discerning patron. The symmetry of the two panels creates a sense of balance, reflecting the meditative nature of the prayers contained within. The work provides a clear example of the high standards of book arts in the late 17th century, where the integration of text and illumination was managed with great technical skill. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the methods used by Ottoman scribes to combine spiritual content with visual beauty, ensuring that the written word remained a central element of artistic expression.
