Portretbuste van Joost van den Vondel - Johannes Lutma

A refined portrait of the poet Joost van den Vondel, rendered as a classical bust with symbolic attributes by the Dutch master Johannes Lutma.

This print by Johannes Lutma depicts the Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel. The composition presents the subject as a classical bust, a common convention for honouring literary figures during the seventeenth century. Lutma, a skilled goldsmith and engraver, employs a sophisticated technique that combines etching with stipple engraving to achieve a sculptural quality. The soft, granular texture of the stippling creates a smooth transition of light across the skin, mimicking the appearance of marble or terracotta.

The bust rests upon a stone plinth, which features a relief carving of a swan. This detail serves as a visual pun on the poet's name, Vondel, which is phonetically linked to the Dutch word for swan. To the left, a lyre is positioned, acting as an attribute of the poet and his association with the Muses. The arched background provides a sense of depth, framing the profile view of the subject with a dark, atmospheric shadow that pushes the bust forward into the viewer's space.

Lutma was a prominent figure in Amsterdam, known for his work in precious metals and his innovative approach to printmaking. This particular work demonstrates his ability to translate the tactile qualities of three-dimensional objects into the two-dimensional medium of paper. The precision of the lines and the careful modulation of tone reveal the technical rigour expected of a master craftsman of the Dutch Golden Age. By integrating symbolic elements like the swan and the lyre, Lutma elevates the portrait beyond a mere likeness, crafting a narrative about the poet's identity and his contribution to Dutch literature. The print remains a fine example of the intersection between portraiture and allegorical design in the seventeenth-century Netherlands.
