A detailed seventeenth-century portrait of Pope Innocent XII, engraved by the Venetian artist Isabella Piccini, featuring formal papal iconography and heraldry.
This portrait of Pope Innocent XII, born Antonio Pignatelli, is a fine example of late seventeenth-century Italian printmaking. Executed by the Venetian artist and nun Isabella Piccini, the work captures the pontiff within a formal oval frame. The composition is surrounded by a dense laurel wreath, which serves as a decorative border containing the names of previous popes, effectively situating Innocent XII within the historical lineage of the papacy.
Piccini employs precise line work to define the facial features of the subject, conveying a sense of gravity and age. The texture of his ecclesiastical vestments is rendered with careful attention to the embroidered details, contrasting with the smooth, shadowed background of the oval. Below the portrait, the papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter rest above the Pignatelli family coat of arms, which features three distinct pots.
Isabella Piccini was a member of the Franciscan order in Venice, where she operated a productive workshop. Her output included numerous book illustrations and portraits for contemporary publications. This specific print reflects the conventions of ecclesiastical portraiture of the era, where the subject is presented not merely as an individual, but as a representative of an office. The clarity of the engraving demonstrates the technical proficiency required for such formal commissions, balancing the rigid requirements of heraldry and historical documentation with the personal likeness of the sitter. The work remains a clear record of the visual culture surrounding the Vatican at the close of the seventeenth century.
