A detailed Baroque engraving by Johann Alexander Böner, featuring a formal portrait of Nicolaus Wilhelm Beckers, Freiherr von Walhorn, complete with heraldic elements.
This engraving by Johann Alexander Böner depicts Nicolaus Wilhelm Beckers, Freiherr von Walhorn, a figure of political and military standing in the late seventeenth century. Böner, a Nuremberg-based engraver, utilised the formal conventions of the period to communicate the status of his subject. The sitter is presented within an oval frame, a common device in Baroque portraiture that focuses attention on the individual while allowing for decorative elements in the surrounding space.
Böner employs precise line work to render the textures of the subject's attire, particularly the lace cravat and the heavy fabric of his coat. The wig, styled in the voluminous fashion of the era, frames a face rendered with careful attention to individual features and expression. The oval frame itself is inscribed with Latin text detailing the titles and roles of Beckers, providing a clear record of his position within the imperial hierarchy. Below the portrait, the composition includes a coat of arms flanked by two winged cherubs, or putti, which add a layer of classical ornamentation to the print. The base features a cartouche containing the Latin motto 'Literis et Armis Pro Caesare ac Rege Catholico Vincere aut mori', which translates to 'By letters and arms, for the Emperor and the Catholic King, to conquer or to die'.
This work is characteristic of the print culture of the time, where such portraits were produced to circulate the likenesses of nobility and officials. The technical execution reflects the skill of the Nuremberg school of engravers, who were known for their ability to balance representational accuracy with the ornamental requirements of formal portraiture. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between personal identity and political symbolism in the Baroque era, capturing the gravity and self-assurance expected of a man in Beckers' position.
