A 1617 engraving by Renold Elstrack depicting the theologian Marcus Antonius de Dominis in a scholarly setting.
This engraving by Renold Elstrack depicts Marcus Antonius de Dominis, a Croatian prelate and theologian who gained notoriety for his conversion to Anglicanism before his eventual return to the Catholic Church. Executed in 1617, the work captures the subject at age fifty-seven, seated at a desk in a scholarly environment. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, placing the sitter in a three-quarter view with his hand resting upon an open manuscript, a quill poised as if in the act of composition.
Elstrack employs precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the subject's ecclesiastical vestments, the lace at his cuffs, and the weathered features of his face. The background includes a shelf of books and a coat of arms, elements that communicate the intellectual status and social standing of the sitter. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions at the base of the print provides a formal identification and a summary of his theological stance, a common feature in the portrait prints of the period intended for circulation among the educated elite.
As one of the earliest practitioners of engraving in England, Elstrack helped establish the visual language for portraiture in the early Stuart era. His technique relies on a systematic arrangement of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and shadow, resulting in a clear, legible image. The print reflects the era's interest in documenting public figures through reproducible media, allowing for the dissemination of likenesses across Europe. This particular impression demonstrates the clarity of Elstrack's line work, which remains sharp despite the age of the plate. The arrangement of the desk, the books, and the sitter creates a balanced, dignified scene that prioritises the subject's role as a man of letters and faith.
