An eighteenth-century portrait engraving by Joseph Anton Zimmermann, featuring the nobleman Joseph Anton von Protreis within an ornate Rococo frame.
This portrait engraving by Joseph Anton Zimmermann depicts Joseph Anton von Protreis, a figure of administrative standing in the Bavarian region during the mid-eighteenth century. The subject is presented in a half-length pose, wearing a periwig and a coat with a heavily embroidered waistcoat, typical of the formal attire for the period. His expression is composed, reflecting the conventions of aristocratic portraiture common in the Rococo era.
The figure is enclosed within a highly decorative cartouche frame. This frame features asymmetrical scrollwork, foliage, and shell-like motifs, which are characteristic of the Rococo style. At the base of the composition, a pedestal supports the frame, incorporating a coat of arms on the right side. Below this, a cartouche contains a lengthy inscription in German, detailing the subject's titles and official roles, including his position as a government councillor and his duties in Burghausen. The text serves as both a biographical record and a formal identification of the sitter.
Zimmermann, active in Augsburg, was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking. The lines are precise, with cross-hatching used to create depth and shadow within the folds of the clothing and the contours of the face. The contrast between the detailed rendering of the sitter and the ornate, fluid lines of the surrounding frame demonstrates the balance between portraiture and decorative art. This print provides a clear example of the formal portrait tradition used to document the social and political hierarchy of the eighteenth-century German states. The work remains a useful reference for the study of costume history and the graphic arts of the period.
