A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Michael Rössler depicting the early German printer Johannes Mentelin.
This engraving by Michael Rössler depicts Johannes Mentelin, the early German printer and publisher from Strasbourg. Mentelin is recognised for establishing one of the first printing presses in the city, contributing to the spread of printed texts during the fifteenth century. Rössler, an engraver active in the eighteenth century, produced this portrait to document the appearance of historical figures associated with the early history of typography.
The portrait follows the conventions of historical printmaking. Mentelin is shown in a bust-length format, wearing a fur-trimmed cap and a doublet with a ruff collar. The artist employs cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the contours of the face, the texture of the fur, and the folds of the clothing. The background consists of a dense, uniform grid pattern, which pushes the figure forward and provides a neutral setting for the subject.
Below the portrait, the Latin inscription identifies the sitter as Johannes Mentelin of Strasbourg, describing him as a printer of the republic. The text includes placeholders for his birth and death dates, indicating that this print was part of a larger series intended to catalogue notable historical individuals. The precision of the line work reflects the technical standards of mid-eighteenth-century German engraving. The composition is balanced and formal, focusing on the characterisation of the subject through traditional physiognomic markers. This print serves as a record of how historical figures were visualised and commemorated in the Enlightenment era, often relying on earlier iconographic traditions to construct a likeness for those who lived long before the advent of modern portraiture.
