A 1531 woodcut portrait of the theologian Johannes Indagine by the German Renaissance master Hans Baldung Grien.
This woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien, dated 1531, depicts the German theologian and astrologer Johannes Indagine. Baldung Grien, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the precise, rhythmic hatching used to define the subject's features and the texture of his garments. The portrait is framed within an architectural arch, adorned with a decorative frieze of foliage and fruit, which provides a sense of structure to the composition.
Indagine is shown in a three-quarter view, his expression serious and contemplative. He holds a scroll, a common attribute in portraiture of the period, signifying his scholarly pursuits. The artist employs a clear, linear style, typical of the German Renaissance, where the focus remains on the clarity of form and the psychological presence of the sitter. The inscription at the base identifies the subject and the date, while the surrounding border elements add a layer of decorative detail that balances the starkness of the portrait.
Baldung Grien was known for his interest in the human figure and his ability to capture character with economy of line. This work reflects the period's interest in humanist portraiture, where the individual is presented with dignity and intellectual weight. The woodcut technique allows for a high degree of contrast, with the dark lines of the hair and clothing set against the lighter areas of the face and background. This print provides a clear example of the graphic arts in sixteenth-century Germany, where the dissemination of portraits of scholars and reformers became a common practice. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill and stylistic conventions of the era, offering a direct view into the visual culture of the Reformation period.
