This stipple engraving by Heinrich Sintzenich depicts the young musicians Johann Peter Pixis and his brother, Friedrich Wilhelm Pixis. The composition presents the brothers in a domestic setting, engaged in a musical performance. Johann Peter is seated at a keyboard instrument, while Friedrich Wilhelm stands behind him, holding a violin. The oval format, typical of late eighteenth-century portraiture, focuses the viewer's attention on the subjects' expressions and their interaction with their instruments.
Sintzenich, a German engraver who spent significant time in London, utilised the stipple technique to achieve soft gradations of tone. This method involves creating images through small dots rather than continuous lines, allowing for a delicate rendering of skin textures and fabric folds. The brothers are dressed in the fashion of the period, with ruffled collars and tailored jackets, reflecting their status as young prodigies in the European musical tradition. The inclusion of sheet music on the stand provides a narrative element, suggesting a moment of collaborative practice.
Johann Peter Pixis later became a well-known pianist and composer, while Friedrich Wilhelm pursued a career as a violinist. This print captures them during their formative years, documenting their early dedication to their craft. The work demonstrates the technical precision of Sintzenich, who was known for his ability to translate painted portraits into the medium of engraving with high fidelity.
