A formal eighteenth-century portrait engraving of Johann Christoph Prentzel, executed by Carl Gottlieb Rasp after a painting by Anton Graff.
This engraving by Carl Gottlieb Rasp depicts Johann Christoph Prentzel, a merchant and official from Bautzen. The work is based on an original painting by Anton Graff, a prolific portraitist of the eighteenth-century German Enlightenment. Rasp, working in Dresden, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of Graff's oil portrait into the medium of copperplate engraving.
The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture from the period. Prentzel is presented within a trompe l'oeil oval frame, which is set against a rectangular architectural background. The frame itself is decorated with a carved laurel wreath, a motif that adds a sense of classical dignity to the subject. The shading within the oval is achieved through fine cross-hatching, creating a smooth transition of tones that gives the face a three-dimensional quality. The subject wears a powdered wig and a coat with a lace cravat, reflecting the standard attire for a man of his social standing in the late eighteenth century.
Below the portrait, a blank tablet is integrated into the architectural structure, intended for an inscription. The print includes handwritten annotations at the base, which identify the sitter, his titles, and his dates of birth and death. These details provide a clear record of the subject's identity and status. The engraving is a clean example of the reproductive printmaking techniques common in the late 1700s, where the primary goal was the accurate dissemination of a likeness. The clarity of the lines and the controlled use of shadow demonstrate the skill required to replicate the textures of fabric and the subtle contours of the human face using only a burin and metal plate.
