A refined 19th-century portrait by Dutch artist Gerrit Lamberts, rendered in graphite and grey wash on paper.
This portrait by Gerrit Lamberts depicts Jan Willem Caspari in a style characteristic of early 19th-century Dutch draughtsmanship. Lamberts, active in Amsterdam, produced numerous portraits and topographical drawings during this period. The work employs a combination of graphite and grey wash to define the subject's features and clothing, creating a sense of volume through subtle tonal variations rather than heavy outlines.
The sitter is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer. He wears a high-collared coat and a cravat, typical of the formal attire for a gentleman of his era. His hand rests upon a surface, holding a pen, which suggests his professional identity or intellectual pursuits. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the character of the sitter against a plain background. The use of wash allows for soft transitions in shadow, particularly around the folds of the coat and the contours of the face.
Lamberts demonstrates a precise approach to anatomy and texture. The drawing captures the individual likeness of Caspari with clarity. The work reflects the period's preference for sober, realistic portraiture, often commissioned by the middle class to document family members or professional associates. As a study in monochromatic media, it provides insight into the technical methods used by Dutch artists to achieve depth and realism without the use of colour. The paper remains largely unadorned, allowing the subject to occupy the space with directness. This print preserves the delicate handling of the original wash, offering a clear view of the artist's mark-making and the subtle interplay of light and shadow across the sitter's form.
