A seventeenth-century Dutch portrait by Thomas de Keyser, depicting the three young Verstegen brothers with careful attention to texture and form.
Thomas de Keyser, a prominent portraitist in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, produced this group portrait in 1635. The work depicts the three young sons of the merchant Jan Verstegen. The composition follows the conventions of Dutch Golden Age portraiture, where the subjects are presented with a degree of formality that reflects the social standing of the family. The two older boys, Jan and Simon, are dressed in dark, tailored garments featuring white lace collars, which contrast with the pale, unclothed form of the infant Hendrick seated between them.
De Keyser demonstrates his technical skill through the rendering of textures. The heavy, draped red fabric in the background provides a theatrical element, while the delicate lace and the soft skin of the infant are handled with precision. The inclusion of a small gold crucifix around the infant's neck adds a specific detail that suggests the family's religious identity or perhaps a protective charm. A small piece of paper is pinned to the wall behind the figures, a common device in portraiture of this period to provide information about the subjects or the date of the work.
This painting is characteristic of De Keyser's ability to balance individual likeness with the requirements of a group arrangement. The boys are positioned to create a stable, triangular structure, drawing the viewer's eye across the canvas. The lighting is focused, illuminating the faces and the central figure of the infant, while the darker tones of the clothing and the background provide depth. The work remains a clear example of the domestic portraiture commissioned by the affluent merchant class in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century.
