A refined stipple engraving by Edmund Scott, dated 1790, portraying the Belgian revolutionary leader Hendrik Karel Nicolaas van der Noot.
This stipple engraving by the British artist Edmund Scott depicts Hendrik Karel Nicolaas van der Noot, a prominent figure in the Brabant Revolution of 1789. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture that directs the viewer's focus to the subject's features. Van der Noot is shown in profile, wearing a period-appropriate coat and cravat, with his hair styled in the fashion of the late eighteenth century. The background features subtle drapery, which adds a sense of depth to the composition without distracting from the sitter.
Scott was a skilled engraver, and this work demonstrates his proficiency with the stipple technique. By using small dots rather than continuous lines to create tone and texture, he achieves a soft, painterly effect that mimics the appearance of a drawing or a wash. The inscription below the portrait identifies the subject as 'Son Excellence Henry Nicolas Vander-Noot, Agent Plenipotentiaire Du peuple Belgique', reflecting his political status during the short-lived United Belgian States. The print was published in London in April 1790, shortly after the events of the revolution, indicating its role as a contemporary record of a political leader.
The work is a fine example of the intersection between political history and printmaking. It serves as a visual document of the era, capturing the likeness of a man who played a central role in the political upheaval of the Low Countries. The clarity of the engraving and the formal presentation suggest it was intended for circulation among those interested in the political developments of the time. The paper retains its original character, showing the plate mark and the crispness of the engraved lines, which remain clear despite the passage of over two centuries.
