This etching by the Dutch artist Philip Zilcken captures a profile view of a man wearing a turban. Zilcken, a printmaker and painter active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, frequently travelled to North Africa, where he produced numerous sketches and prints documenting the people and environments he encountered. His technical approach to the etching medium relies on fine, controlled lines to build form and shadow, particularly within the folds of the headwear and the contours of the subject's face.
The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the subject's head and shoulders against a neutral background. Zilcken employs a delicate hatching technique to suggest the texture of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the skin.
