A seventeenth-century mezzotint portrait of the Dutch naval officer Cornelis Tromp, engraved by Alexander Browne after Sir Peter Lely.
This mezzotint depicts Cornelis Tromp, a Dutch naval officer, rendered with the tonal depth characteristic of the medium. Alexander Browne, a publisher and engraver active in London, produced this work after a painting by Sir Peter Lely. The portrait captures Tromp in a three-quarter view, his posture conveying authority. He holds a baton, a symbol of his rank as Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and Friesland. His attire includes a cravat and a doublet, reflecting the fashion of the late seventeenth century.
In the background, a naval engagement is visible, providing context for the subject's career. The smoke and ships suggest the maritime conflicts that defined Tromp's life. The mezzotint process allows for smooth gradations of light and shadow, which Browne uses to model the subject's face and the folds of his clothing. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture of the period, where the sitter is presented as a figure of power and military success.
Browne was known for his role in introducing and popularising the mezzotint technique in England. By translating Lely's oil paintings into print, he made these images accessible to a wider audience. The inscription at the base identifies the sitter and notes the publisher's address in Little Queen Street. This print provides a clear example of how portraiture functioned to document the appearance and status of public figures during the Restoration era. The technical execution demonstrates the capacity of mezzotint to replicate the painterly qualities of the original canvas, particularly in the soft transitions between the dark background and the illuminated features of the subject.
