A formal eighteenth-century engraving of Anna of Hanover, Princess of Orange-Nassau, presented within an ornate architectural frame.
This refined engraving depicts Anna of Hanover, Princess of Orange-Nassau, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Pieter Tanjé, a skilled engraver based in Amsterdam, executed this work after a design by G. Sanders. The composition follows the conventions of formal royal portraiture, placing the subject within a trompe-l'oeil stone frame that suggests a window or architectural niche.
Anna is shown in a half-length pose, her gaze directed towards the viewer. She wears a garment adorned with ermine fur, a traditional symbol of her noble status. The surrounding frame is decorated with sculptural elements, including acanthus leaves and a unicorn head, which add a sense of weight and classical order to the print. The inscription at the base identifies the sitter as Anna van Brunswyk Lunenburg, Princess of Orange, reflecting her complex dynastic titles. The shading techniques employed by Tanjé, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the stone textures, demonstrate a high level of control over the burin. The work was published by the Societ. Bibliopol. in Rotterdam, a common practice for disseminating royal imagery to a wider public during this period.
This print provides a clear example of the formal visual language used to communicate authority and lineage in the eighteenth century. The balance between the realistic portrait and the decorative frame creates a structured, orderly aesthetic. It remains a valuable record of the iconography associated with the House of Orange-Nassau during the mid-1700s, capturing the sitter with a degree of formality that was expected of royal portraiture at the time.
