A detailed 1771 engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicting the Dutch clergyman Winold Budde within a classical stone frame.
This engraving by Jacobus Houbraken, dated 1771, depicts the Dutch clergyman Winold Budde. Houbraken was a prolific engraver, widely recognised for his technical precision and his contribution to the documentation of historical figures through portraiture. The work follows the conventions of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, utilising a trompe l'oeil stone frame to create a sense of depth and physical presence.
The subject is presented in a bust-length format, positioned within a circular aperture. He wears the traditional attire of a Dutch minister, including a dark coat and the distinctive white clerical bands. His right hand is raised in a gesture of address or contemplation, a common motif in clerical portraiture of the period. The shading is achieved through fine, controlled cross-hatching, which defines the contours of the face and the folds of the fabric with clarity.
Below the portrait, a pedestal contains an inscription detailing the subject's name, birth date, and professional role in Amsterdam. The text serves both as a biographical record and a compositional anchor for the image. The surrounding stone architecture, rendered with meticulous attention to light and shadow, provides a formal setting that elevates the subject. The print reflects the disciplined approach of the Dutch school, where the focus remains on the accurate representation of the sitter's features and the social status conveyed by their dress. This piece is a representative example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the artist balances the demands of likeness with the decorative requirements of the frame and cartouche. It offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Dutch Enlightenment, where such prints were circulated to commemorate public figures and intellectuals.
