A 1761 portrait by Joshua Reynolds depicting the daughters of the Earl of Hardwicke in a serene, natural setting.
Joshua Reynolds, the first President of the Royal Academy, painted this work in 1761. It depicts the two daughters of the Earl of Hardwicke, Amabel and Mary Jemima Yorke, in a setting that blends classical artifice with the natural world. The elder sister, Amabel, stands with a dove perched upon her hand, while the younger, Mary Jemima, interacts with a small dog.
Reynolds employs a technique that draws upon the traditions of the Old Masters, particularly in the handling of light and the soft, atmospheric treatment of the background. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged against a stone plinth and a dense, shadowed woodland. The clothing of the subjects reflects the fashion of the mid-eighteenth century, rendered with fluid brushwork that suggests the texture of silk and lace.
This portrait demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the innocence of childhood while adhering to the formal requirements of aristocratic portraiture. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy browns, soft greys, and touches of blue and red, creates a sense of harmony. The interaction between the children and the animals adds a narrative quality to the scene, moving away from the rigid poses often found in earlier portraiture. Reynolds was known for his experimentation with pigments, and the surface of this work shows the characteristic depth and tonal range associated with his practice. The painting remains a clear example of the British portrait tradition during the Georgian era, focusing on the grace and poise of the sitters within a carefully constructed environment.
