A dignified 1872 portrait of the Russian lexicographer Vladimir Dahl by Vasily Perov, capturing the author in a moment of quiet contemplation.
Vasily Perov painted this portrait of Vladimir Dahl in 1872, a decade that marked the height of the Peredvizhniki movement in Russia. The subject, Vladimir Dahl, is remembered for his monumental work in lexicography, specifically his dictionary of the living Great Russian language. Perov captures the author in his later years, presenting a figure of quiet intellectual authority.
The composition is restrained and focused. Dahl sits in a high-backed chair upholstered in a deep, muted blue fabric, which provides a cool contrast to the warm, earthy tones of his coat. His posture is relaxed, with hands folded in his lap, suggesting a moment of contemplation. Perov employs a naturalistic approach, paying close attention to the texture of Dahl's grey beard and the subtle play of light across his features. The background is kept dark and indistinct, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the sitter's expression.
Perov was a founding member of the Peredvizhniki, a group of artists who sought to bring art to the public and depict the reality of Russian life. While many of his works focused on social commentary, his portraiture demonstrates a keen ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects. This painting is held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It remains a primary visual record of one of the most influential figures in Russian linguistic history. The print reproduction preserves the tonal balance of the original oil painting, maintaining the sombre, dignified atmosphere that Perov intended to convey through his careful brushwork and subdued colour palette.
