An eighteenth-century engraving by Guillaume Philippe Benoist depicting Admiral Sir George Pocock in formal naval regalia.
This engraving depicts Sir George Pocock, a prominent British naval officer who served as an Admiral of the Blue Squadron. Guillaume Philippe Benoist, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. The portrait follows the conventions of formal naval iconography, presenting the subject within an oval frame that directs attention to his facial features and official attire.
The technique employed is typical of the period, utilising fine cross-hatching and parallel lines to model the form of the face and the texture of the uniform. The Admiral is shown wearing his regalia, with the insignia of his rank clearly visible. The inscription below the oval identifies the sitter by his title and naval position, a common practice for prints intended for circulation among the public or within collections of notable figures.
Benoist was known for his ability to translate painted portraits into the medium of print, often working from originals by contemporary painters. This specific print captures the formal, composed nature of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the subject is presented with a sense of authority and professional standing. The monochromatic nature of the engraving allows for a focus on the precision of the line work and the tonal variations achieved through the density of the etched marks. The work provides a clear record of the visual culture surrounding the British Admiralty during a period of significant naval activity. It is a representative example of the portrait prints that were widely collected in the eighteenth century, documenting the appearance and status of individuals who shaped the maritime history of the era.
