A formal 1636 Dutch Golden Age portrait of Sara Sweerts de Weert, featuring the sitter in traditional black attire with a white ruff.
This portrait depicts Sara Sweerts de Weert, born in 1579, who was the second wife of the physician Antonius Antonides van der Linden. Painted by Hendrik Meerman in 1636, the work captures the sitter at the age of fifty-seven, as indicated by the inscription in the upper right corner. The painting adheres to the conventions of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, prioritising a sober and dignified representation of the subject.
Sara Sweerts de Weert is shown in a seated position, wearing a black gown characteristic of the period. Her attire includes a large, stiffened white ruff, which frames her face and draws attention to her expression. The lace-trimmed cuffs at her wrists provide a subtle contrast to the dark fabric of her dress. Her hands rest calmly on the arms of the chair, with a simple gold ring visible on her finger. The dark, neutral background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the sitter.
In the upper left corner, a heraldic coat of arms is displayed, identifying the family lineage of the subject. The lighting is controlled, creating soft shadows that define the volume of her clothing and the contours of her face. Meerman employs a restrained palette, dominated by black, white, and warm skin tones, which reflects the modest and pious aesthetic often favoured by the Dutch burgher class during this era. The panel support provides a smooth surface that allows for the precise rendering of textures, from the fine lace to the heavy fabric of the gown. This portrait offers a clear view into the social status and fashion of the time, documenting the appearance of a woman within the professional circles of the Dutch Republic.
