This monochrome reproduction depicts the Buddha Sakyamuni, a subject attributed to the Tang Dynasty master Wu Daozi. Wu Daozi remains one of the most celebrated figures in Chinese art history, known for his ability to imbue figures with a sense of movement and volume through his brushwork. This composition presents the Buddha in a meditative posture, seated upon a lotus base. The figure is framed by a large, circular halo, which provides a stark contrast to the fluid, rhythmic lines of the robes.
The drapery of the garments exhibits the characteristic style associated with Wu Daozi, often described as having the appearance of wind-blown silk. The lines are modulated, shifting in weight to define the folds and the physical presence of the body beneath the fabric. The facial features are rendered with restraint, conveying a sense of calm and introspection.
