A neoclassical portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, depicting Prince Henry Lubomirski as a winged allegorical figure holding a laurel wreath.
Painted in 1788, this work depicts Prince Henry Lubomirski, a young Polish nobleman, portrayed in the guise of the Genius of Fame. Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, a favoured portraitist of the French aristocracy, employs the allegorical conventions common to the period to elevate her subject. The prince is shown kneeling, his youthful form partially draped in a crimson cloth, while large, feathered wings extend from his back. He holds a laurel wreath, a traditional symbol of victory and achievement, which he offers towards the viewer.
The composition reflects the artist's technical proficiency in rendering skin tones and soft, naturalistic textures. The lighting is gentle, focusing attention on the subject's face and the delicate structure of the wings. Vigée Le Brun balances the mythological elements with a sense of individual character, capturing the prince with a serene and contemplative expression. The background remains relatively simple, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus of the viewer's attention.
This portrait was created during a period when the artist was at the height of her career in Paris, shortly before the political upheavals of the French Revolution forced her into exile. The work demonstrates the refined aesthetic of the late eighteenth century, where classical themes were frequently used to frame contemporary portraiture. The use of colour, particularly the contrast between the pale flesh tones and the deep red fabric, provides a visual balance that is characteristic of the artist's style. The painting remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions that defined the era, combining classical allegory with the personal likeness of the sitter.
