A detailed nineteenth-century lithograph by Gustav Lüderitz, depicting Prince Charles of Prussia in formal military attire.
This lithograph by Gustav Lüderitz depicts Prince Charles of Prussia, a member of the House of Hohenzollern. Lüderitz, a German printmaker active during the early nineteenth century, utilised the lithographic process to capture the refined features and military bearing of his subject. The portrait presents the Prince in his formal uniform, complete with epaulettes and high collar, reflecting the rigid social and military hierarchies of the period.
The composition balances the figure against a natural backdrop. A tree stands to the left, while a distant shoreline and a small vessel appear on the right. This arrangement follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, where the sitter is placed within a controlled environment that suggests both status and leisure. The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of the Biedermeier era, focusing on clear lines and subtle tonal gradations to render the texture of the uniform and the soft modelling of the face.
Lüderitz was known for his ability to translate painted portraits into reproducible prints, making images of the nobility accessible to a wider audience. This work provides a clear view of the aesthetic preferences of the time, favouring order, clarity, and a restrained approach to composition. The print captures the Prince at a young age, conveying a sense of composure and youthful authority. The background elements, though secondary to the portrait, provide a sense of place and atmosphere, grounding the figure in a recognisable, if idealised, setting. As a historical document, the print offers insight into the visual culture of the Prussian court, where such portraits were circulated to reinforce the public image of the royal family. The work remains a representative example of nineteenth-century German printmaking, documenting both the individual and the stylistic norms of the era.
