This portrait depicts Pope Paul III, born Alessandro Farnese, seated in a wooden chair. Painted by Titian in 1543, the work captures the subject with a direct, penetrating gaze. The Pope wears a crimson velvet mozzetta over a white alb, the textures of which are rendered with the artist's characteristic mastery of oil paint. The heavy, folded fabric of the vestments contrasts with the aged, weathered features of the sitter's face and his long, white beard.
Titian employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward, focusing the viewer's attention on the psychological presence of the pontiff. The lighting is directional, catching the sheen of the velvet and the subtle details of the Pope's hands, one of which rests upon the arm of the chair. The composition is structured yet natural, avoiding rigid formality in favour of a sense of immediate, human presence.
