A detailed 16th-century engraving by Hendrick Hondius (I) depicting the theologian Peter Martyr Vermigli, rendered with precise line work.
This engraving by Hendrick Hondius (I) depicts the Italian theologian Peter Martyr Vermigli. Hondius, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher active in The Hague, produced this work as part of a series documenting influential figures of the Reformation. The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a traditional academic cap and a heavy, textured cloak.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Hondius employs a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face, the folds of the fabric, and the subtle play of light across the sitter's features. The background consists of horizontal lines, which provide a neutral setting that directs attention toward the subject.
Below the portrait, a Latin inscription provides biographical context, noting Vermigli's origins in Tuscany and his subsequent travels through Germany, England, and Switzerland. The inclusion of the artist's monogram, 'H fe' (Hondius fecit), appears in the upper right corner. This print serves as a historical record of the intellectual climate of the period, reflecting the dissemination of portraiture through the medium of engraving. The work is typical of the period's interest in documenting the lives of scholars and religious leaders, often distributed as loose sheets or bound within biographical collections. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition are indicative of the high standards maintained by the Hondius workshop during this era.
