A 1837 portrait of the sumo wrestler Ōzora Buzaemon by Watanabe Kazan, featuring realistic shading and ink wash techniques.
Watanabe Kazan, a scholar and painter of the Edo period, created this portrait of the sumo wrestler Ōzora Buzaemon in 1837. The work demonstrates the artist's interest in Western techniques of shading and anatomical accuracy, which he integrated into the traditional Japanese ink wash tradition. Unlike the stylised depictions common in ukiyo-e prints of the era, this portrait offers a grounded, observational study of the subject.
The figure stands in a three-quarter view, wearing a patterned kimono and carrying two swords, which denote his status. The artist employs subtle ink washes to define the folds of the fabric and the contours of the wrestler's face. The use of light and shadow around the eyes and jawline provides a sense of volume that was unconventional for the time. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the physical presence of the subject.
Kazan was a member of the intellectual circle known as the Rangaku, or Dutch Learning group, which sought to understand Western science and art. This intellectual curiosity is visible in the precise rendering of the hands and the realistic proportions of the figure. The inclusion of a folding fan adds a touch of colour to the otherwise muted palette of ink and earth tones. This portrait is a record of a specific individual, capturing a moment of quiet reflection rather than a dramatic action. The inscription in the lower corner provides historical context, noting the date and the identity of the sitter. This print is a reproduction of the original hanging scroll, maintaining the delicate balance of ink density and negative space characteristic of Kazan's work.
