A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Jodocus Egidius Krauss depicting the French philosopher Nicolas Malebranche in his clerical robes.
This engraving depicts the French philosopher Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715), a figure associated with the Oratorian order and Cartesian thought. The work is executed by the German engraver Jodocus Egidius Krauss, who was active during the first half of the eighteenth century. The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a common convention for scholarly and ecclesiastical likenesses of the period. Malebranche is shown in his clerical attire, wearing a skullcap and a simple cassock, reflecting his life as a priest of the Oratory of Jesus.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of eighteenth-century copperplate engraving. Krauss employs a system of cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the contours of the face and the texture of the garments. The background features a subtle suggestion of a library or study setting, indicated by the grid-like patterns that imply shelves or architectural elements. This choice of setting aligns with the subject's reputation as a thinker and author of works such as 'De la recherche de la vérité'.
Below the portrait, a printed label provides the subject's name and title in Latin: 'NICOLAUS MALEBRANCHE Congregationis Oratorii D.I. Sacerdos'. The inclusion of this text identifies the sitter clearly and situates the print within the tradition of commemorative portraiture. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its historical production. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the intellectual character of the subject rather than decorative excess. This print serves as a record of the visual identity of a major figure in early modern philosophy, captured through the medium of reproductive printmaking.
